Backed by the Silicon Valley accelerator Y Combinator (still “stealth”!), LEAH Labs is looking for a cornerstone Scientist with founder mentality and entrepreneurial spirit to help us “make something people want”. The Scientist will work with the founding team to implement and iterate upon LEAH Labs’ T cell engineering platform. This Scientist will have regular access to our world-class Scientific Founders with deep expertise in T cell therapies, genome engineering and veterinary science. In the spirit of a lean startup culture, the candidate need not have all listed skills so long as they have a willingness to learn and grow with the company. Aspects of this position include: project leadership of this key research team, design and execution of lab experiments, innovative problem solving, and data analysis. A successful candidate will leverage their experience, curiosity, and creativity to design and implement a high-throughput pipeline for T cell engineering. 

Responsibilities: 
• Develop and enhance T cell engineering pipelines using LEAH’s cutting-edge in-house gene editing platforms
• Create, update, and maintain experimental SOPs as the key basis for downstream protocol development in the vet clinics
• Recommend next steps based on experimental analysis
• Maintain detailed experimental records
• Aid in the hiring and managing of scientific staff for this lead team 

Skills and Experience:
• Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or a related discipline
• Direct experience with: T cell culture, in vitro T cell function assays
• Proven record in immuno-oncology or related field
• Expertise in immunology and cell-mediated immunity
• Demonstrated record of innovation in molecular biology and/or cellular assays
• Direct experience with flow cytometry and immunolabeling
• Strong communication and presentation skills
• Willingness to work in a fast-paced, lean startup environment

Desired Traits:
• Familiarity with R programming
• Familiarity with: NGS/sequencing library preparation and analysis, and other genomic platforms
• Experience with lab robotics platforms
• Experience with molecular cloning
• Knowledgeable in DNA repair pathways
• Experience with designer nuclease platforms
• Experience managing people

The candidate will be responsible to perform all aspects of processing and analyzing cells and tissues for regenerative medicine programs. The laboratory work requires an understanding of mammalian pathology and molecular biology techniques, attention to detail, and quality focused mindset.

Essential Duties and Job Functions: 

The candidate must think critically and creatively and work independently. Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • MS or equivalent experience in Histology and Molecular Biology or related science

  • A minimum of 3 years of histology experience, preferably human and mammalian tissue processing.

  • Expertise in paraffin and frozen sections of mammalian tissues

  • Experience in various molecular biology methods, including: PCR, qPCR, Southern, Western, Northern, IHC, ICC, FISH, DNA cloning

  • Experience with various microscopy techniques

  • Willingness to work with lentiviral vector and human biological samples

  • Demonstrated ability to create written experimental plans

  • Ability to keep current with relevant scientific literature

  • Attention to detail and strong laboratory record keeping is required

  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills

  • Knowledge of automated laboratory systems is a plus

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Introduce new methods, platforms and project concepts

  • Experience in various molecular biology methods, including: PCR, qPCR, Southern, Western, Northern, IHC, ICC, FISH, DNA cloning

  • Knowledge and proven experience in NGS methods: ChIP, ATAC, RNA-seq, Single-cell RNA-seq, etc.

  • Extensive experience with flow cytometry, specifically in characterizing multiple populations and subpopulations during embryo development

  • Experience with various microscopy techniques

  • Willingness to work with lentiviral vector and human biological samples

  • Maintain accurate and reliable record keeping including database management, notebooks, and all other pertinent documentation.

  • Ability to keep current with relevant scientific literature

  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills

  • Ability to take ownership of projects and results

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in oral and written formats

The Opportunity
• Plan and complete research and development activities to characterize castration free swine in a project funded by the USDA FFAR Animal Welfare grant.
• Collaborative interaction and project support provided by two key international genetics companies. As well as leading swine reproductive physiologists at the USDA-ARS USMARC.
• Project goals are to establish how deletion of kisspeptin 1 by gene editing affects male and female swine physiology in commercial genetic lines. 
• Conduct studies in vivo and in primary tissue culture that will involve a range of molecular biology methods.
• Develop immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization techniques to quantify expression.
• Characterize biological variation in the reproductive axis by conducting RNAseq analysis with follow up in proteomic analysis and metabolomic analysis.
• The overall objective is to develop methods for the commercial-scale rescue of puberty and fertility from kisspeptin 1 knock out swine.

Qualifications Required
The applicant must be eligible to work in the United States without restrictions and possess near-native fluency in English, written and oral. The candidate also must have earned a Ph.D. degree within the last six years in Animal Science, Physiology, Molecular Biology or a related field of study. Specialized experience of mammalian neuroanatomy and neuroendocrinology highly desired.
